Initiative:

National Policies and Strategies

Where we work: Nigeria

Nigeria faces longstanding obstacles and growing threats in providing food and nutrition security for its growing population, which is currently around 216 million and expected to double by 2050. Specific challenges include internal conflicts and insecurity, climatic shocks, and malnutrition. Transforming agriculture remains the most likely pathway for poverty reduction, especially in the rural areas.

In Nigeria, the CGIAR Initiative on National Policies and Strategies is undertaking analysis and policy support to responds to build policy coherence, especially between federal and state levels; to integrate policy tools for state-level analysis; and to respond to crises such as the recent food price inflation. The objective is to strengthen the agri-food system to take advantage of opportunities to supply Nigerian and large urban and rural food markets. To achieve this objective, the Initiative is working in close partnership with partners such as the Nigerian Institute for Social and Economic Research and the Agricultural Policy Research Network.
