Initiative:
Resilient Cities
Research activities: Strengthening inclusive and sustainable informal food markets and supply chains
Informal urban food markets provide tremendous livelihood opportunities for poor urban women, youth and migrants, whilst serving the basic food needs of the majority of the world’s urban population. Resilient Cities supports collaboration between market vendors and researchers for adaptive technology development in areas such as storage, waste reduction, food safety and simple processing. It also links informal enterprises to business services and digital market platforms, and works with local authorities and trade associations to improve working conditions and strengthen incentives for scaling of good food safety and waste reduction practices.
