CGIAR and Tropentag align in their shared commitment to sustainable and fair tropical agriculture practices, food security, research, and knowledge sharing, contributing to the development and improvement of agricultural systems in developing countries.
The Tropentag Conference
Held annually, Tropentag is the largest interdisciplinary conference in Europe, focused on development-oriented research in the fields of tropical and subtropical agriculture, food security, natural resource management and rural development.
The 2023 Tropentag Summit
Tropentag 2023 is centered on the imperative to reshape food systems in response to pressing global challenges such as COVID-19, climate change, conflicts, and income inequality.
Despite the world producing abundant food, there’s a decline in global crop diversity, heightening vulnerability to climate shocks and negatively impacting nutrition and health. Rising food and fuel prices further exacerbate issues, particularly for marginalized communities. Inadequate and insecure jobs, especially among women, compound these challenges.
The conference will facilitate discussions on diverse perspectives and approaches to food system transformation, examining the benefits, costs, trade-offs, and synergies, with the ultimate goal of achieving just, equitable, and sustainable food systems.
CGIAR Participation
IFPRI will be featured at this year’s conference, and CGIAR will engage in a wide range of events throughout the week. These include:

- September 20
- “Achieving resilient food systems,” a plenary session keynote address by Johan Swinnen, Director General of IFPRI and Managing Director of Systems Transformation for CGIAR
- “Advancing a demand-driven research portfolio to improve water, land, and food systems in the Global South,” a parallel thematic session organized by CGIAR’s Systems Transformation Science Group
- September 21
- “Payments for ecosystem services: Win-win solutions?” a parallel thematic session organized by CGIAR, IFPRI, and Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). (Note: this session is part of a CGIAR Seminar Series and will be livestreamed by IFPRI)
