Climate, peace, and security in the agriculture sector

The Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT through the CGIAR Initiative on Climate Resilience (ClimBeR) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development through its Climate Change Unit (MOALD-CCU),  and the Climate-Smart Agriculture Multistakeholder Platform (CSA-MSP) Technical Working Group 5 on Social Inclusivity, with the support of the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), have been developing a Climate, Peace and Security in the Agricultural Sector training module.

This module aims to improve the understanding of the climate, peace, and security nexus within the agricultural sector, with a specific focus on climate-smart agriculture (CSA). Climate-smart agriculture offers a holistic approach to transform agricultural systems and address the relationship between agriculture and climate change. By promoting sustainable agricultural practices, linking adaptation to mitigation opportunities, and building resilience, climate-smart agricultural practices can have a positive contribution on preventing and mitigating conflict risks. 

Consequently, integrating climate-smart agriculture measures with peacebuilding and conflict-sensitive approaches can stabilize food production and reduce the strain on natural resources, preventing maladaptation.
