Women and poor smallholder farmers in many developing countries across regions continue to face challenges in accessing good quality seed of preferred varieties at the time and place they need, due to a range of challenges and barriers. However, there have also not been many efforts to systematically assess access to seed for the marginal socio-economic groups of seed users. In an effort to bridge this gap, the CGIAR Seed Equal Initiative supported the development and pilot testing of a set of indicators that could measure inclusive access to seed.
This webinar will introduce these indicators of inclusive access, primarily interpreted as access by women and youth, to quality seed of preferred varieties. After a careful review of existing tools and literature, the research team developed an initial set of indicators. The indicators were critiqued by relevant stakeholders, and the revised set of indicators were tested in a pilot study in Uganda in 2023. Findings of the pilot study, whose main aim was to test which of the proposed indicators could provide a meaningful measure of inclusive access to improved seeds, will also be presented. It will also highlight challenges, unanswered or emerging questions, and possible next steps on taking this important measure of seed systems forward.
