The CGIAR Research Initiative on Sustainable Healthy Diets through Food Systems Transformation (SHiFT) has published its final annual report, showcasing progress made from 2022 to 2024 in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, and Viet Nam.
Over the past three years, SHiFT combined high-quality research with strategic partnerships to support country-led food systems transformation toward sustainable healthy diets. The 2024 report provides a snapshot of this work, highlighting notable achievements and engagements.
Key highlights from the report:
- 170 knowledge products developed, including journal articles, book chapters, briefs, and working papers
- 1,300+ individuals trained through capacity sharing activities
- 30 innovations developed to change consumption patterns toward healthy diets
- 9 policy changes co-led by 11 national partners
The report also features the Training of Trainers (ToT) program, which was co-designed with national partners, facilitated by Wageningen University & Research, and successfully rolled out in Viet Nam and Ethiopia. The Key Results Story focuses on Viet Nam, where SHiFT’s capacity strengthening efforts trained over 300 stakeholders to lead food systems transformation at the subnational level.
Throughout the Initiative, SHiFT generated evidence across its five Work Packages, addressing topics such as adolescent diets, food environments, governance, and trade-off scenarios. Collaboration with other CGIAR Initiatives, such as Resilient Cities and Fruit and Vegetables for Sustainable Healthy Diets, helped extend SHiFT’s reach and amplify its impact on global food systems research.
Looking ahead, SHiFT’s momentum will continue under the new CGIAR Science Program on Better Diets and Nutrition, which aims to identify, co-design, and test food system solutions that tackle constraints to sustainable healthy diets.
