Before disaster strikes: preparing for complex emergencies with anticipatory action

Enhancing disaster preparedness and building resilience in fragile settings requires fostering a deeper understanding of the complexities involved.

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) plays a significant role in enhancing disaster preparedness and building resilience in fragile settings, particularly in the context of climate-related disasters. In collaboration with the CGIAR initiative on Fragility, Conflict, and Migration, IWMI is actively involved in research focused on anticipatory action (AA) to strengthen disaster preparedness and adaptation in fragile and conflict-affected regions. This research underscores the importance of early warning systems, coordination among stakeholders, building institutional capacities, securing sustainable climate finance, and integrating AA into development plans. By addressing these priorities and leveraging the principles of the humanitarian-development-peace (HDP) nexus, the research aims to foster a deeper understanding of these complexities and develop effective conflict-sensitive AA strategies that enhance disaster preparedness and build resilience in vulnerable populations facing the challenges of climate change and fragility.
