The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) jointly launched the publication “Water Quality in Agriculture: Risks and Risk Mitigation” during the Rome Water Dialogue on October 5, 2023. This publication, authored by international experts, provides comprehensive guidelines and solutions for assessing and mitigating risks related to water quality in agriculture, with a focus on technical solutions and best agricultural practices. It covers various aspects of farming, including crop and livestock farming, as well as fish farming or aquaculture.
The publication emphasizes the importance of evaluating and safely using water for agriculture, considering health and environmental protection. It highlights key guidelines, particularly for wastewater and salinity-related water use, addressing pathogenic and chemical contaminants. This resource is intended for national and subnational authorities, farmers, project managers, engineers, academics, and extension officers to assess water quality information and identify solutions related to water quality issues across the agricultural spectrum, contributing to sustainable integration of agriculture, water, and health.
