In recognition of his immense contribution to research, food security, and bilateral cooperation in agriculture globally, the immediate past Director General of CGIAR’s International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Dr Nteranya Sanginga, was decorated with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star.
Dr Sanginga, who is among this year’s foreign recipients of the 2023 Spring Imperial Decorations, received one of the highest orders awarded in the name of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan in acknowledgment of his impactful service towards strengthening relations and promoting mutual understanding between Japan and sub-Saharan Africa in the field of agriculture. He is the first in CGIAR to receive the award.
Under his leadership at IITA-CGIAR, Sanginga created an enabling environment for researchers worldwide to carry out their research, with training opportunities for several Japanese researchers in various research areas.
