CGIAR is working for a food-secure future, and is dedicated to transforming food, land, and water systems in a climate crisis. The food system is at the heart of the climate action agenda, and CGIAR is very engaged in this critical mission. The agricultural sector is among the most affected by climate change and extreme weather events that result from a warming world, with increasing food security challenges, caused by higher temperatures, sea level rise, erratic rainfall, droughts, and flooding. Extreme climate events are projected to affect all countries, with climate-related disasters predicted to displace up to 200 million people by 2050.
In collaboration with its partners, CGIAR is actively addressing a crucial gap in the field, where there is a pressing need for enhanced knowledge and context-specific actions. Specifically, the focus is on developing climate solutions tailored to the needs of food producers and consumers in low- and middle-income countries— through strategic efforts to reduce food-based emissions and establish carbon sinks in targeted geographic areas. Simultaneously, CGIAR is providing support to stakeholders to enhance their resilience and adaptability to existing and emerging climate shocks and drivers.
CGIAR’s five Impact Area Platforms serve as a fundamental component in the execution of its mission and 2030 Research and Innovation Strategy. These platforms enable CGIAR to maximize its efficacy in contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and achieve measurable impact across these five impact areas, serving the global public good and specific target geographies.
The Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Impact Area Platform consolidates CGIAR’s climate research efforts, enhancing the organization’s capacity and visibility. It actively engages with prominent climate voices, provides strategic advice on portfolio-level management, and monitors the outcomes of various Research Initiatives. By facilitating CGIAR to effectively link cutting-edge, integrated science to strategic pathways for impact, the Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Impact Area Platform plays a pivotal role in ensuring CGIAR’s effectiveness in fulfilling its mission.
