Odisha’s rural economy is reshaping because of urbanization, market expansion, increased livelihood opportunities in the non-farm sector and changes in land use patterns. Economic and institutional reforms are underway, and their successful implementation in the next few years will increase the per capita income and improve the average living standard of the people.
To design effective programs and strategies, a holistic approach should be adopted, involving learning from the past, considering agricultural constraints, and understanding Odisha’s agrifood system. Developing appropriate investment options would provide the foundation to transform and develop resilient agrifood value chains in Odisha. This will help to provide new opportunities for farmers to earn a better livelihood.
In this context, the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), CGIAR Research Initiative on National Policies and Strategies (NPS), and International Food Policy Research Institute jointly organized a consultation on November 29, 2023 at the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment (Krushi Bhavan), Bhubaneswar, Odisha to gather insights on challenges and opportunities in agrifood value chains and food system transformation. Researchers, civil societies, farmers’ organizations, government officials, and representatives from the private sector participated in the event.
