The CGIAR Research Initiatives within the CGIAR 2022–24 Investment Prospectus have been organized around three Action Areas: Genetic Innovation, Resilient Agrifood Systems and Systems Transformation. CGIAR scientists are organized into three Science Groups that correspond to these three Action Areas. While each Initiative is managed by a specific Science Group, scientists working on these Initiatives typically come from across the CGIAR System and partner organizations.
Genetic Innovation
With a primary focus on crop development and seed systems, the Genetic Innovation Science Group provides informed seed technology and delivery solutions. Genetic Innovation researchers steward genetic resources and address barriers to the rapid development of improved crop varieties, thereby increasing genetic gain and varietal turnover in farmers’ fields.
Resilient Agrifood Systems
The Resilient Agrifood Systems Science Group has a primary focus on field, farm, landscape, and aquatic integrated solutions. Researchers aim to increase sustainable agricultural systems and aquatic food productivity, increase the availability of safe, nutrient-dense foods from both terrestrial and aquatic sources; reduce threats to human health; reduce the environmental footprint of agrifood and aquatic food systems; increase the resilience of smallholder agriculture and fisheries to climate change; and reduce gender, youth and social inequalities in agrifood systems.
Systems Transformation
Systems Transformation Science Group researchers have a primary focus on policies and institutions to support systems transformation. Recognizing the need for coordinated action across political and organizational boundaries to properly address agricultural, environmental, health, and societal challenges and risks, Systems Transformation researchers pursue ambitious new multi-sectoral strategies for food, land, and water systems transformation.
