A food systems approach to climate action

Food systems transformation lies at the heart of climate action.

Current food, climate and environment challenges are deeply interconnected, meaning solutions must address all three aspects simultaneously, in a systemic way.

Political inaction and incoherent, disconnected initiatives that do not consider trade-offs and co-benefits associated with different agri-food transformation pathways will delay progress on climate- resilient food systems and could lead to maladaptation.

Systems approaches facilitate integrated thinking across sectors to identify positive synergies and manage trade-offs.

CGIAR recommends the promotion of inclusive, participatory, and context-specific climate actions, which requires a supportive policy and legal environment, as well as adequate financing.
