Agricultural Breakthrough Technology 2 Factsheet: Alternative Proteins

Livestock farming and fisheries account for over half of food-related greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). While animal-source foods (ASF) like meat, milk, eggs, and fish can be a source of high-quality protein, vital for children’s growth and development, the high consumption rates in high-income countries have a substantial environmental footprint. In some low- and middle-income countries, ASF consumption is low, but demand is projected to rise globally by 2050, especially as incomes increase. Proteins derived from alternate sources offer a potential solution: a high-protein diet that treads more lightly on the planet.
