Integrating Water Storage to enhance Water–Energy–Food–Ecosystems Benefits: IPSR Innovation Profile

The water storage diagnostic is an approach to integrating assessments of different storage types, such as aquifers, soil moisture, and dams. The diagnostic framework supports planning and management decisions across these water storage types by identifying and comparing their relative opportunities and risks. Methods for evaluating individual storage options include recession flow analysis and hydrogeological modelling (for aquifers); analysis of earth observation data (for dams); and analysis of in-situ and remotely sensed or modelled data (for soil moisture). Planning and management across (rather than within) storage types enables the identification of complementary roles for alternative storage options and the design of a diversified path to storage development, which in turn brings a suite of benefits including greater WEFE benefits to water-using communities. This approach is expected to be used by water planners and basin managers in river basin organizations or catchment councils of the Limpopo Basin, the Aral Sea, and the Ganges.
