Cambodia is dominated by smallholder rice farming, which is predominantly aimed at subsistence production. Impressive production gains in rice yields have been achieved since the 1990s, made possible through the introduction of improved-quality seed and new varieties with shorter maturation periods, associated production increases in the off-season, mechanization, investments into public infrastructure and the development of value chains (including storage), access to finance and markets, improved agricultural extension services and availability of quality inputs, availability of small-scale irrigation, and investments by overseas development funders.
