County Climate Smart Agriculture Multi-stakeholder's Platform Creation and Climate Security Course Pilot

Climate change poses significant threats to Kenya’s agricultural sector, food security, and overall peace and security. Agriculture in Kenya is mainly rain-fed and approximately 14.9 million people derive their income from agriculture, which makes up about 80% of Kenya’s rural population. Consequently, climatic stressors may have a significant impact on climate-sensitive crop and livestock systems.

Climate–Smart Agriculture (CSA) offers a holistic approach to transform agricultural systems with a co-benefit of enhancing resilience of communities in the face of climate change. By promoting sustainable agricultural practices, linking adaptation to mitigation opportunities, and building resilience, climate-smart agricultural practices can have a positive contribution on preventing and mitigating conflict risks.

Therefore, CGIAR FOCUS Climate Security and the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT (ABC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, through its Climate Change Unit (MOALD-CCU), have partnered to establish a Climate Smart Agriculture Multi-stakeholder Platform (CSA MSP) and pilot a course aimed at spearhead CSA as a tool to enhance climate, peace and security in Laikipia county.
