Plant breeding provides sustainable options to increase domestic food supply and dietary diversity in Africa. Knowledge and access to modern breeding techniques and creating awareness on the importance of plant breeders’ capacity to drive innovations and technology adoption is key to feeding a growing population and adapting to climate change. With a view to bridging this gap between plant breeding and seed systems, a conference on Advances in Classical Breeding and Application of Modern Breeding Tools for Food and Nutrition Security in Africa, will be held on 23-25 October 2019, in Accra, Ghana.
At the conference, the African Plant Breeders Association (APBA) will be launched to serve as a platform for plant breeders and seed scientists to discuss their findings and define a roadmap for their fields. The conference will contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 2, Zero hunger, which the CGIAR Research Program on Grain Legumes and Dryland Cereals (CRP-GLDC) too supports.
The conference will bring together plant breeding and seed systems professionals, researchers and students from both public and private sectors. It aims to promote scientific plant breeding and related research through discussion and communication; promote interactions to advance the science and business of plant breeding; influence plant breeding training and education and contribute to continuing professional development of members; reflect on emerging issues in food and nutrition security; promote high standards of professional ethics among its members; and raise awareness on the importance of plant breeding and seed systems.
